Thousands of dedicated music lovers nationwide took a step back into time on Saturday, April 16, 2011, for the 5th annual National Record Store Day.
It's a day organized by coalitions of independent record stores that are keeping it mostly old school with the waxy vinyl. Many record stores participate in creating some killer discounts that they hope will generate large revenues for their business and thus making it possibly their largest sales day of the year. Also many record labels seize the opportunistic day to release collectible vinyl, limited-edition CDs and live material.
Some may say that vinyl is dead, but I believe vinyl lives. It still lives and breathes, and it's on the rise in sales. According to Nielsen Soundscan, vinyl album sales grew by 14% in 2010. Plain and simple, vinyl is just better sounding and it's something you can treasure as keepsake. Vinyl records are way to have music in a physical format that you can hold and feel in your hands. There's just no better way to listen music than just to have it right there in your hands!
As for independent record stores, there are two reasons to buy music from them rather than Wal-mart, Best Buy, Amazon, or iTunes. Those reasons are that: you can collect a physical product and the hospitality and personal interaction you can have with the employees and other music enthusiasts at record stores.
