Emergeny Blogpost: Appalachain Music


I'm in an Appalachian Music class at the University of Kentucky and I'm working on this project called, The Great Appalachian Song Search Project were I have chosen six different songs or ballads to listen to, research and play  on my radio show.  Here are the six songs and some tidbits of information to go with them.

  
John Jacob Niles was an American Folksinger, Folklorist, Composer, Collector of Traditional Ballads and was also known as the “Dean of American Balladeers”.  He was born in 1892 in Louisville, Kentucky and died in 1980 in Lexington, Kentucky. 

2) Daniel Dutton “Barbara Allen” Twelve Ballads(Someone else singing "Barbara Allen")


Daniel Dutton was born in 1959 near Somerset, Kentucky.  He is a contemporary artist, lyricist, composer, artistic director, and amateur filmmaker, whose work combines visual, musical, and narrative arts.

3) Carter Family “Wabash Cannon Ball”


The Carter Family comprised of Alvin P. Carter and two reserved country girls -- his wife, Sara, and their sister-in-law Maybelle.  The Carter Family sang a pure, simple harmony.

4) Jean Ritchie “Careless Love”


Jean Ritchie was born on December 8, 1922 and is an American folk singer, songwriter and dulcimer player.

5) Daniel Dutton “Pretty Polly” Twelve Ballads

6) Loretta Lynn “High On A Mountain Top” Van Lear Rose


Loretta Lynn is country music royalty.  She is a coal miner’s daughter and born in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky in 1935.  She married at 13 years old to Oliver “Due” Lynn.
