The Last Post

 The Crescendo has had the best of intentions of providing information about singer-songwriters from all genres, with artist and song(s) picks of the week on Sundays, radios show playlists on Mondays, Name The Tunes Tuesdays and opinion blogposts on Thursdays.


After 1.5 years of existence by providing y'all with information about talented singer-songwriters from all genres, 295 posts and a 9 month long radio show incorporated with my blog, The Crescendo is laying down to rest. 

Since moving back to Indiana its been hard for me to keep up with The Crescendo and its sister music blog, The Fermata, due to limited internet access.  Therefore after 1.5 years of blogging about music…I’m done.

I encourage those who read this blog to keep searching for artists that break away from the mainstream and create their own sound.  Listen to artists that write their own songs, because that's how music should be!

Soldiers and Musicians

 What a terrific program!


Soldiers and Songs' mission is to embrace American Veterans upon their return home providing free music lessons and to share music with every veteran and active military to play an instrument.   

Soldier Songs and Voices has been hosting Monday night guitar and songwriting classes at Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos, Texas since summer of 2011.  Musician and songwriter Dustin Welch leads the sessions with the help of other musicians volunteering their time teaching.  The group recently added a Sunday Afternoon session at Saxon Pub in Austin, Texas.  Solider Songs ad Voices hosts sessions across the country and new ones are in the works for Houston, Texas and La Grange, Texas.  (According to CultureMap Austin)

One of the Greatest Radio Shows You'll Never Hear Again

After 9 months of bringing you singer-songwriters from all genres and singer-songwriters from Texas, the Crescendo will no longer be running on WRFL, 88.1 FM.  


The Crescendo's last radio show will be on Monday, April 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time).

Artist of the Week:  Sara Radle

Sara Radle is an American musician who began her music career in the late 90s in San Antonio, Texas.  She made a name for herself in the Texas music scene with the punk-pop trio Lucy Loves Schroeder, as well as doing her own solo stuff.

She is most known for reuniting  the band The Rentals in 2005 with ex-Weezer bassist Matt Sharp.  Not very long after the reunion Sharp asked Radle to relocate to Los Angeles, CA in 2005.

Recently Radle has released her fifth solo LP, Same Sun Shines (2012).

She has also been doing some touring with PInATA PROTEST and Girl In A Coma.

Artist of the Week:  Levon Helm

A few days prior to April 19, Levon Helm's daughter Amy and wife Sandy posted a message on Helm's website announcing that he was nearing the end of his long battle with throat cancer.  Many artists and musicians tweeted and posted statuses on their Facebook expressing their sadness of the news.

Then on April 19, surrounded by family, friends and band mates, Helm the legendary drummer for The Band, passed away at the age of 71. 


After Helm's passing, musicians and pop culture figures such as Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Van Morrison, John Cusack and Rainn Wilson used social media to discuss Helm's legacy.


Levon Helm, a man who will be truly missed by many.

 She is working on her first solo project and is doing a pledge music campaign to raise money for her EP she is wanting to release.  She has already exceeded her money goal, but you can still pledge and earn some pretty cool prizes, and also most importantly when you pledge you're ensuring your an advance copy in digital or physical form of her EP before its official release.  (Pretty damn cool!)

Also 10% of any money raised after the target of 100% is raised will go straight to Health Alliance for Austin Musicians or HAAM.  (BTW...a 100% has been raised, so when you pledge NOW, money will be going to HAAM.) :-)

HAAM is this awesome organization that provides medical assistance to working musicians in Austin, Texas.

There's more to Mills' story and I suggest you go like her Facebook page and find more out about her and her solo project, and also who her influences are and who she is dedicating her EP to.

Who's Hank?

My heart sank as she asked me, "Who's Hank?"


What?!  

Should I die now or die a slow, painful death as you slowly yank the dagger you just shanked into my chest?


I wrote a poem about some of my favorite songwriters for my poetry class that my classmates were reviewing to give me feedback on.  In the poem, I referenced names like Dylan, Guthrie and...Hank.  These names should stand alone, but to some...I guess they don't. 


I would have been cool with the question, "Are you referring to Hank Williams Senior or Junior?"  Now, that's an acceptable question that my heart can bear.


Who's Hank?  You're kidding, right?  No, one of the girls reviewing my poem was serious.  

Wow...what are we teaching kids these days?!


Also another girl reviewing my  poem said, "Wow, these are all songwriters.  You did a lot of research for this poem."


I didn't know how to tell my review group that I didn't do any research for this poem...I just know.


I turned in an extra copy of some of poems to my professor and he gave me back the poem were I referenced some of my favorite songwriters.  He wrote one comment.  "Why so much effort in this poem compared to your other poems."


I know his comment, which is actually a question is rhetorical, but if I could answer him I would say..."I didn't put any effort into this poem.  I wrote what I knew or know, and also I wrote this poem while I was drunk."  That's the honest truth!  No kidding!


I pretty much just proved Ernest Hemmingway right.  "Write drunk.  Edit Sober."
